We love working with enthusiastic engineering students and give them the opportunity to work with our simulation specialists and tools. However, every year we have limited FEA and CFD internship positions available. In 2019, out of the many applications, we selected Leslie to join the team. What did your work consist of?

I did several assignments in the 22 weeks I interned at Femto. Last year, we provided tech support for the TU Delft Solar Boat Team. One of the wings on their boat malfunctioned during one of the races, and it was my job to find out why. Another interesting project was an assignment for a company that produced roof tiles. I liked this the most because of the freedom and responsibility. From start to finish it was my own project. Starting with meshing, then analyzing and converting the results into a final report.

Which software did you use during this assignment?

For the first project with the TU Delft Solar Boat Team, I used Femap to calculate the strength of the design. When I was working on the project with the roof tiles, I used Simcenter 3D because I had to redesign the geometry to make the design stronger, but it had to fit in the same mold.  It was nice to work with this software at Femto Engineering. What is working at Femto Engineering like?

Working at Femto Engineering is very productive. The working atmosphere is very casual, but serious at the same time. I was given a lot of freedom and responsibility. My colleagues were very helpful towards me. When in doubt, they would take the time to answer my questions and get me right back on track.

Why do you aspire to become an engineer?

I have always had a liking for math and solving problems. I am also very interested in mechanical design, so I wanted to do something with that. After I finished high school, I started my studies mechanical engineering at the Haagse Hogeschool where I am in my third year.
